Fall Prevention

When a Single Fall Changes Everything

Every year, hundreds of individuals with reduced mobility experience falls in their own homes or in residential care settings. For the individual, the consequences can be severe: fractures, surgical intervention, loss of functional capacity – and, in the worst cases, permanent dependence on assistance.

However, the impact of a fall extends far beyond the individual. It initiates a complex and resource-intensive process involving multiple sectors of the healthcare system:

  • Emergency admission

  • Surgical treatment and hospitalization

  • Rehabilitation and ongoing care

  • Increased need for daily support

  • Additional municipal costs and staffing demands

A single fall can result in costs amounting to hundreds of thousands of kroner – in addition to an irreversible loss of quality of life. Fall prevention is therefore not an optional service; it is a critical necessity.

Effective prevention focuses on reducing risk before an incident occurs.

This requires a systematic approach, sustained attention, and, importantly, the appropriate assistive solutions.

Many falls occur when individuals attempt to reach for crutches or other mobility aids that have tipped over or been placed out of reach.

For users of forearm crutches, this is a common daily situation that can be prevented with the right solution – yet it is frequently overlooked.

At Go or Stay, we have developed Elefanten– a flexible accessory for forearm crutches designed to ensure they remain stable, upright, and within reach when set aside.

Small Measures –

Significant Impact

Fall prevention does not always require major investments. Often, it is about integrating simple, intelligent solutions into everyday routines.

The Elefantenis a clear example:

An assistive device that helps prevent falls, protects the individual’s independence, and at the same time reduces the workload of already stretched care staff.

Prevent Falls in Everyday Life – and Create Greater Security

A fall can happen in an instant, yet the consequences may last for a long time. For people with mobility challenges – and for their families – the risk of falling is a genuine concern in daily life. A fall can result in fractures, hospitalization, and loss of independence. In some cases, it marks the beginning of a prolonged period of rehabilitation, home care support – or permanent care.

However, many falls can, in fact, be prevented. It does not necessarily require major changes. Often, it is about implementing small, practical solutions that make everyday life safer and more secure.

How to Prevent Falls

There is much you can do to prevent falls at home – both as a crutch user and as a family member.

Here are some practical recommendations:

  • Remove loose rugs, cables, and clutter from the floor.

  • Ensure adequate lighting, particularly at night.

  • Use furniture and handrails for support whenever possible.

  • Take your time, especially if you feel tired or dizzy.

  • Make sure your crutches are always stable and within reach.

The last point is often overlooked – yet it can make a significant difference.

Safety Begins with Fall Prevention

Fall prevention is not only about avoiding injuries. It is also about preserving freedom, dignity, and independence in everyday life.

With small adjustments and the right assistive devices, you can make your home safer – and make daily life a little easier for yourself and those around you.

What Causes Falls?

Most falls do not occur on staircases or in traffic. They happen at home – during ordinary, everyday activities. When standing up from a chair. When going to the bathroom at night. When attempting to pick up a crutch that has fallen over.

Forearm crutches, in particular, can present a challenge. They easily tip over when placed against a wall or chair. This increases the risk of falling when reaching for them – or tripping over them on the floor.

A Small Assistive Device with Significant Impact

At Go or Stay, we have developed The Elefant– a small, flexible hook that attaches directly to your forearm crutch. It allows you to hang or secure the crutch on, for example, tables, beds, chairs, or rollators, preventing it from tipping over when set aside.

This eliminates the need to bend down to pick up a fallen crutch – and reduces the risk of losing balance because the crutch is out of reach.

Many of our users report that The Elefantprovides greater freedom and peace of mind in everyday life – and that it also makes daily routines easier for their relatives and caregivers.
